Sarah Palin is a Quitter

Even the surprise resignation of Sarah Palin as the Governor of Alaska failed to bump the ongoing speculation regarding Michael Jackson from CNN's Larry King Live. Why does this not surprise me?

The one time Vice-Presidential candidate announced today that she would not be seeking re-election in 2010. Rather than sitting out her term as a "lame duck", and with the full support of her family, Palin has decided to step down as Governor at the end of the month, a move that has surprised Politico's across the US. It has also fueled long standing rumours that she will be mounting a Presidential campaign for 2012. Ugh. Considering that she has only been Governor for 2 and a half years, she would be hard-pressed to convince voters that she has the experience to become the leader of the free world in 2012. I prefer the other rumour that she is leaving politics completely. Many pundits, both left and right wing have raised the idea that this is the final nail in Palin's political coffin. I hope so. I guess time will tell.

It was a rambling, somewhat disjointed speech. She claims she was candid in her reasons, but I really have no idea why she resigned. Apparently we should be congratulating her for being a quitter? Sure, I will. If it means she will never hold public office again. I may even send flowers. The Governor took no questions. Not very "mavericky" of her is it? You betcha!

Johnny Depp Makes Everything Better

The theme of my vacation is pretty much doing nothing of consequence. No grand plans to paint my apartment, discover that fabulous new place to shop, write the great Canadian novel. My plans, as I have stated to anyone who will listen, involve lots of napping, TV, snoozing, reading, dozing, music, sleeping, writing (this blog, not anything earth shattering) and catching up with old friends.

So yesterday I ventured out into the beautiful sunshine, walked the 2 blocks to Scotiabank Movie Theatre and went and saw Public Enemies. 5 minutes in I moved seats as the douches seating near me decided that commenting throughout the whole movie would be fun for everyone. Ugh. I take it as a good sign that I kept my snarky comments to myself and simply moved seats (I am so totally growing as a person).

Touted as the thinking person's summer blockbuster, Public Enemies tells the story of 1930's FBI agent Melvin Purvis and his pursuit of folk hero robber John Dillinger, which culminates in the infamous shooting of Dillinger outside of a Chicago movie theatre.

The acting was phenomenal (of course). Johnny totally embodied the role of John Dillinger - he was captivating and mesmerising - he made me root for him completely. The stunning Marion Colltiard was fantastic as Dillinger's girlfriend Bille Frechette and as always Christian Bale was solid as FBI hero Melvin Purvis. The supporting cast was also impressive - Giovanni Ribisi, Billy Cruddip, Rory Cochrane, Branka Katic, Stephen Dorff - all good.

Technically the movie was also impressive. Director Michale Mann creates incredible atmosphere with his authentic use of guns, cars, costumes and buildings. The shoot out scenes were so different from what I am used to simply because they were using old-school 1930's guns. There was no crazy Tranformers style world record for biggest explosion here. No superheros doing unbelievable stunts. No regular folks suddenly being able to do extraordinary things. Just men with loud old school guns. That was actually very refreshing.

The one thing that I found lacking in the movie was the story. It was good, but kind of dull. There were so many things going at once. I believe that central story of the film was Purvis pursuit of Dillinger. Or was it about Dillinger's relationship with Billie Frechette? One of those two. So did we need to see all the J Edgar Hoover bulls*it, or the introduction and then casual dismissal of some of the minor characters? I don't think this was necessary and I didn't really care. I also read a few reviews that said it was a fitting time to tell this Depression era story. This film was set in the Depression? Huh. I wouldn't have known that from watching it.

I love Johnny Depp. So I will happily sit through 2 and a half hour movie if Johnny is in it. He is great in this, I loved his understated charisma (he gave Marion "the look" many times throughout the film, swoon) in this film. It is worth it for Johnny. He makes everything better. Even a mediocre movie like Public Enemies.

Robin Sparkles had a Girl Ya'll

My favourite fictional Canadian pop-superstar from the '90's - Ms Robin Sparkles gave birth to her first child - a girl named Shaelyn Kado Killam on May 16th. Okay, so it was actually Colbie Smulders, one of the stars of NBC's How I Met Your Mother. Vancouver born Colbie plays the token Canadian - Robin Scherbatsky - in this very funny and under-rated series and during the second season it is revealed that she was a two-hit wonder, minor pop star in my home & native land. Video's below. They are pretty self-explanatory.

Couldn't you just die! Cameo's from Tiffany, James van der Beek, and everyones favourite dad Jason Seaver (AKA Alan Thicke) from Growing Pains. Amazingness.

This show is all around fabulosity. If you are not watching it, you should. It also stars the awesome Alyson Hannigan (Willow from Buffy), Jason Segal (Freaks & Geeks, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Josh Radner, and the most amazing Neil Patrick Harris - recently confirmed as the host of this year's Emmy's.

Ally and her husband (Alexis Denisof, who played Wesley Windham Price on from Buffy & Angel) welcomed their first daughter - Satyana Denisof - in March. This was the very first baby born of a Buffyverse coupling. Love them.

Finally, if you needed another reason to watch the show - best quote ever. It is legen......wait for it..... dary (okay so you kinda have to watch the show to get that one)
Robin: "I love Bruce Springsteen. He's like a Canadian Bryan Adams"

Twi-Hards bring the word crazy to a whole new level

There is nothing wrong with being a fan of a movie franchise. There is also nothing spectacularly wrong with screaming hysterical fandom (it's a little weird, but I can live with it.

There is also nothing wrong with Tattoo's. I have a number myself. I love me some good ink.

But to have any aspect of a movie, celebrity or TV show permanently tattooed on your body brings the crazy up to a whole new stratosphere.

Behold the batsh*t bonkers Twilight Saga superfans who have voluntarily chosen to get some aspect of this movie franchise memorialised in ink somewhere on their body. Unless, maybe, they all lost a bet? These are just a few of the fun & interesting images I found with a simple search of the interweb. Sigh.

Yes that is a tattoo of Rob Pattinson's autograph on the left and the stars of the movie on the right. I think we have a tie for craziest twi-hard in existence.
I really want to track down these girls (as sadly, they are all girls) in 20 or 30 years. Maybe laser tattoo removal will be super cheap and painless by then?

Word of Wisdom from Speidi

The King & Queen of shameless self-promotion appeared on a radio show hosted by controversial conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. There's a lot of fun and interesting Speidi gems that can be gleaned from this interview, far too many to go into them all in detail. Here are my personal faves.

Microchips: When the possibility of Human Microchip Implants was brought up by Jones, Heidi informed us that it says in the Bible that Microchips were a "mark of the beast" and a sign of devil worshipping. She then went on to state that the chip is the end of humanity. Ummm, I went to Catholic School until I was 18, Church until I was about 15. I do not recall there ever being a sermon or lesson about the dangers of microchips. Maybe the Church that Heidi worships at has a different Bible.

"Why are we so famous?" These words actually came of of Spencer Pratt's mouth. He wondered why they were so famous and no press was given to important issues such as Global Warming and the passing of the Cap & Trade Bill. Psssst Spence, that is because you are the worlds biggest fame whore, who spends every waking moment trying to get more press for yourself and your twit of a wife.

The Hils Being compared to the Government.... with Speidi as....Obama? Okay, so this is a little confusing. The less than stellar relationship that Speidi currently has with the media is Lauren Conrad's fault. As she was the narrator of the Hills she was able to twist things to the disadvantage of Spencer & Heidi. Somehow this is related to the Government manipulating the media and Speidi being the Obama in this scenario. I don't get his logic either, but that is basically what he said.

9/11 was an inside job: Jones is a very vocal proponent of a theory that September 11, was an inside job and Spencer agreed wholeheartedly with him. They spent every waking moment on the interweb researching this for the past month or so. Of course, that is when they were not spouting their holy-roller bullsh*t via Twitter. I tried to follow them both on Twitter, cause they were funny (in the laughing at them sense of funny, not the laughing with them sense of funny). But the endless daily posts about God, quoting scripture and warning us all of Armageddon were too much for me to handle.

Birth Control: Heidi is apparently "very scared" of birth control, believing that it was created by the government. God help us all she is no longer on birth control.

Ummmm yea. I could go on, but I truly believe that reading or writing about them lowers your IQ exponentially. I have yet to decide if I will be watching the new season of The Hills. I think I may be breaking up with The Hills.

Rob with a Guitar

Very quickly, here are some photos of R-Pattz in NYC filming "Remember Me". Completely gratuitous & unnecessary posting, the only reason is because he is holding a guitar. I love this man with a guitar.

You know he can sing right? He had two songs on the Twilight soundtrack. When he was in Vancity filming New Moon in the Spring, my one wish was to randomly run into him performing at some dive bar. There would be no twi-hards around, no batsh*t crazy twi-moms wanting to touch his hair. Our eyes would meet across the crowded room and he would......... okay. I will stop now. Here is a video of him singing at Hollywood's Whiskey A Go Go in October last year. Sadly, I think the chances of me seeing him singing live are slim to none at the moment. Due to the crazy surrounding his life, I don't think he is gonna venture out for open mike nights any time soon. F*cking twi-hard losers ruin everything. Ugh.

Angie Versus Jenny = Round 657

I am not quite sure how the tabloids will spin this into a story about Bradd Pitt, but they will find a way. Forbes just released their annual "Hollywood's Top-Earning Actresses" and of course, these two battled it out for top place. Srsly, even in earnings these 2 are supposedly in competition? Angelina came out on top with a $27 million payday last year, with Jen lagging behind with $25 million.

I have stayed very firmly on Team Switzerland when it comes to the whole Jen-Brad-Angelina situation. People are typically very polarised about this, but I really do not think Angie is the devil in this. Those who say that "as a woman" Angie should have stayed the f*ck away from Jen's husband, seem to forget that "as a MARRIED MAN", Brad should have kept his d*ck in his pants. I know, I know, women need to stick together. I agree. But, blaming Angelina for this let's Brad Pitt completely off the hook.

And seriously it happened a long time ago. I think Jen is Okay. Or at least she has moved on.....and on.....and on.....and on. She is fine.
