Although she did not have a direct hand in the brutal Tate/La Bianca murders that rocked the world in 1969, Fromme became the unofficial leader of the family once Charlie was arrested. During the trial she rallied the remaining Family members, camping outside the courthouse, disrupting the trial at times, proclaiming Manson's innocence to the media, intimidating witnesses and even going so far as to carve an "x" in their forehead when Manson did.
The attempted assassination of Ford supposedly had nothing to do with Manson (she wanted to talk to him about the plight of the California Redwoods). But her escape from jail in 1987 most definitely did (she had heard that Manson was suffering from testicular cancer). She was captured within a few days.
